If you use a phrasal verb, use its most common meaning. Some phrasal verbs have several meanings [6]. The examples in Table 5.2 show the most common meaning of each phrasal verb. L2 readers are more likely to know these.

In addition, if you use a phrasal verb, keep its parts together, as shown in Example 5.5. Do not separate them.

Before: You need to set the experiment up.

After: You need to set up the experiment.

The frequency of phrasal verbs is a relatively new area of research, so they have not yet been incorporated into vocabulary profilers. However, development is underway to do so [1].
